Hieronder staan afbeeldingen van mijn huidige programma "ASTROGRAV"

Sinds (juli 2011) gebruik ik
ASTROGRAV
om o.a. Kometen en Asteroiden te onderzoeken.
We zien hier komeet
Gehrels 3 in
1970 en
1973 die door
Jupiter een aantal jaren gevangen wordt gehouden.
Comet Gehrels 3 was closely bound to Jupiter, essentially
in orbit, all during the time from 1970 to 1973

39P/Oterma
The Case of a lost Comet (1942)
Comets typically are lost, seen for one perihelion passage and never again.
This is to be expected of a parabolic or hyperbolic orbit, but is als true of
many periodic comets.Orbit-changing encounters with planets is another possibility.
Here you see investigate the interesting case of 39P/Oterma.
a comet discovered in 1942, seen for two additional apparitions (1950 and 1958),
but lost since !!
1950
1958
Brian Marsden wrote in the 1986 edition of "
Catalogue of Cometary Orbits":
"P/Oterma is lost. It has been subjected to severe pertubations by Jupiter, with the result that the period
is now 19 years, and the perihelion distance more than 5 AU; as of this writing no confirmed observations
have been reported from around the time of its 1983 perihelion passage" !
Well, you can see why with AstroGrav !
A strong perturbation by Jupiter during 1962-1963 kicked it out into a much larger orbit !
After Oterma gets well past Jupiter's perturbing influence and with AstroGrav you will see a new 5.5 AU perhelion,
and a period nearly 19 years, in excellent agreement with Dr. Marsden's estimates.
Checking Object Status in 1916, we find a perihelion of 5.7AU period of 20.7 years.
So this is why it wasn't to be discovered intil 1942 !
